Trend scouting : Cowichan sweaters and bandanas

eng : This is a sweater you would definitely recognize as it was famously worn by The Dude. But did you know that it is actually a celebrated item of Canada’s heritage? Cowichan sweaters have been hand-spun and woven in the Cowichan Valley since the turn of the 20th century. Authentic Cowichans use virgin wool from local sheep, relying on the aging of the sheep for the variance in color. The natural oils aren’t washed out, making all authentic Cowichans not only warm, but water resistant. Coast Salish knitters wash, dry, hand tease and card the wool, before spinning and weaving them into a one-of-a-kind sweaters. And since no two are alike, spotting these sweaters up and down the west coast is like taking a glimpse into the history of the Pacific Northwest tribes. So cool.

And now, the good ol’ Western bandana . . . its storied past and fixture in pop culture makes it one inexpensive and timeless accessory. As long time collectors of bandanas, old and new, we love how these super chic ladies (and men) styled them wrapped around the neck, tied up in the hair or swathed around the wrist. As much as we’ve devoted to the traditional paisley patterned squares, we’ve recently been digging these hand printed and hand sewn versions from Japan as of late.

Όταν τα βλέπεις όμως σου έρχεται στο μυαλό : α) Η Marilyn που φορά ένα και μπαίνει στην θάλασσα - διάσημη φωτογραφία και β) Ο Jeff Bridges στην ταινία The Dude που δεν φόρεσε άλλο ρούχο, με αυτό την έβγαλε από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος της. Αυτό που δεν ξέρεις είναι πως τα cowichans είναι στοιχείο της "πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς" του Καναδά. Κι αν το καλοσκεφτείς, έξυπνα το έπαιξαν οι Καναδοί. Το φορούν το πουλοβεράκι από το 1800 και βάλε συνέχεια, κάθε κομμάτι που παράγεται είναι μοναδικό (και καλά τώρα), έγινε φέτος trend, στα πάνω της η εθνική Καναδέζικη υπερηφάνεια. Ενώ εμείς τι να φορέσουμε για να το κάνουμε trend? Το μάρμαρο της Kαρυάτιδας? Δεν γίνεται. Πρέπει να εξετάσουμε το τετράπτυχο "φουστανέλα-τσαρούχι-φούντα-φέσι" πολύ σοβαρά γιατί κι εμείς έχουμε κληρονομιές με τη σέσουλα κιουρία μου. 
Για το άλλο trend που θα φορεθεί από την άνοιξη κι έπειτα τόσο πολύ, που στο τέλος του καλοκαιριού θα το βαρεθούμε και θα το έχουμε μόνο για να δένουμε κανένα σπασμένο χέρι, δεν θα πω πολλά πράγματα. Η bandana έχει αναπτύξει συμπεριφορά κατσαρίδας. Δεν πεθαίνει με τίποτε. Συμπορεύεται με κάτι παλαιορόκ ήρωες που ξέμειναν σε κάτι χρονοντούλαπα των προσωπικών ιστοριών τους που τα έκλεισαν γκόμενες που ήθελαν να προχωρήσουν παρακάτω. Εσύ τι θα κάνεις κούκλα? Θα πας παρακάτω ή θα μείνεις στάσιμη κι αυτή την χρονιά?
